Census 18712 April 1871Alfred Snelson Id #1,663 (son) was at home on Census night 2 April 1871 at 57 Handbridge, St. John, Chester; I think Ann(ie) is [1672], the grand daughter of Margaret Coventry [11] and is the daughter of Margaret Snelson [14] who was unmarried at the time. Here, we find Ann with her grandmother - and I note that her "condition" has not been filled in by the enumerator. He probably didn't know what to write in that column. We will never know who the father may be. The Margaret Snelson in the BTs at Annie's birth says her mother Margaret is a spinster - so that would be Margaret Coventry's daughter. Ann perhaps is being brought up by her grandmother.

Census 18814 April 1881Annie Snelson Id #1,672 (Principal) was at home on Census night 4 April 1881 at 53 Handbridge, Chester, Cheshire; The records say that Jane was Head of the Household, but absent on Census night. I think that this might refer to Jane Roscow [19942] who married Hannah's brother Thomas Snelson, the plumber - who lived in Bolton. On the other hand, this Jane may be the daughter of Thomas Snelson and Jane Crawford.

On the surface that is - I think the Census recorder has made a mistake here - I am sure that this William Roberts is married to Hannah Snelson, the daughter of Samuel Snelson & Margaret Coventry. This theory is supported by the fact that Hannah's parish marriage records that her father is Samuel Snelson, a cabinet maker.

Jane Roscow died in 1880 - which might explain why she was absent and also she lived in Bolton. It's a mystery for the moment.

I think in 1881, William Roberts is identified as the Son-in-Law of Jane - who is absent but perhaps the real Head of the Hosehold or absent landlord. William's wife is Hannah and their 2 children Mary H Roberts and Sarah Roberts are at home that night. Also home is Annie Snelson shown as a daughter aged 17 - but she must be the daughter of Margaret Snelson [14], Hannah's sister methinks.

Jane is Annie's aunt - well because Jane Roscow is married to Annie's mother's brother.

Census 19111911Annie Snelson Id #1,672 (Principal) was at home on Census night 1911 at Sherwood Street, Newton, Alfecton, Blackwell; Samuel Chadburn is shown as "son" of Ernest Chadburn - but of course he is not the son of his current wife Annie Snelson - he is the son on Ernest Chadburn's first wife, Ellen Spencer.

I wonder whether the first wife Ellen Spencer diedaged 43 of the same cause as her daughter Ann aged only 1 year ?
