Census 1881 | 4 April 1881 | Hannah Snelson Id #1,558 (Principal) was at home on Census night 4 April 1881 at 53 Handbridge, Chester, Cheshire; The records say that Jane was Head of the Household, but absent on Census night. I think that this might refer to Jane Roscow [19942] who married Hannah's brother Thomas Snelson, the plumber - who lived in Bolton. On the other hand, this Jane may be the daughter of Thomas Snelson and Jane Crawford.
On the surface that is - I think the Census recorder has made a mistake here - I am sure that this William Roberts is married to Hannah Snelson, the daughter of Samuel Snelson & Margaret Coventry. This theory is supported by the fact that Hannah's parish marriage records that her father is Samuel Snelson, a cabinet maker.
Jane Roscow died in 1880 - which might explain why she was absent and also she lived in Bolton. It's a mystery for the moment.
I think in 1881, William Roberts is identified as the Son-in-Law of Jane - who is absent but perhaps the real Head of the Hosehold or absent landlord. William's wife is Hannah and their 2 children Mary H Roberts and Sarah Roberts are at home that night. Also home is Annie Snelson shown as a daughter aged 17 - but she must be the daughter of Margaret Snelson [14], Hannah's sister methinks.
Jane is Annie's aunt - well because Jane Roscow is married to Annie's mother's brother. Witness Role: daughter

- Biography:
. Let's call him "Henry the Corn Factor".
He will be the Snelson grocer who died in 1907, and whose will was proven in August of that year. His wife is named as Maria ( Priddey ) and his brother Thomas Edward Snelson ( journalist ) as beneficiaries or executors.
In Maria's will, she names her sons as Charles Snelson and Egerton Snelson, and nominates as executors her brothers-in-law Robert J. Millington ( presumably her sister's husband ) and Robert Snelson, hay merchant. A witness to a codicil is Emily Millington .... surely her married sister.
This is the Henry who was admitted as a Freeman of the City on 31 May 1877.
He was working with his mother Ann Snelson in the Grocer's Shop at 48 Handbridge in 1881. In his will he is described as a corn factor. He left L3403 13s 10p.

- Biography: William Egerton Snelson was his uncle.
In 1934, Kelly's Cheshire Directory lists "Henry Snelson & Sons" of Chester as Corn Dealers. I believe that this ties in with Henry Snelson being a Corn Factor ealier around 1900 and the entry in the 1938 Kelly's Directory which listes " Chas Snelson a Corn Dealer of Canal Side in Chester and E. Snelson a Corn Dealer of again, Canal Side. I think this is Charles Snelson and Egerton Snelson, sons of Henry Snelson the Corn Factor.
