Main Events

  • Biography: Broad Oak appears to be part of or associated with Burton, which is just over the Welsh border, 2 miles north east of Gresford which is also in Wales.

Rossett is a township and parish that was formed in 1840 out of the parish of Gresford, comprising the Denbighshire townships of Allington ( Trefalun ) and Burton, and the detached Flintshire townships of Marford and Hoseley. The parish of Gresford records start at 1661. Llay church, a chapel of ease of the parish of Gresford, was consecrated in 1925 and became a separate parish in 1944. Gresford parish includes the townships of Allington ( Trefalun ), Burras Riffri, Burton, Erddig, Erlas Gresford, Gwersyllt, Hosely, LLai ( Llay ) and Marford.

Some Snelsons of Burton are buried at Gresford, and the following are buried at Pulford - John Snelson ( d. 1831 ), his wife Elizabeth ( d. 1818 ), Peter Snelson ( d. 1856 ) and his wife Elizabeth ( d. 1888 ), plus other Snelsons of Poulton which is about 1.5 kilometres east of Pulford, but in England. There is an Australian connection here that I finally worked out on New Year's Eve, 1990. This was like a great revelation - I kicked myself for not seeing it earlier. Still, I cannot find the link to my lot. Panicus Notus !

Gwersyllt is just down the road from Dodleston and close to Gresford and even I guess, Eccleston, which is the parish seat of the Duke of Westminster and the Grosvenor family. Eaton Hall close by is the family manor and estate.

Some trivia taken verbatim from memoranda in the Parish Registers -
" the fairs began at Gresford on 4th December 1752. There was a drought in the year 1762 from the 2 May ( new stile ) to the 7 July 1763. The church steeple in hight to the battlements 27 yards one foot from the Battlments to top of the pinnacles 3 yards & half. The inside of the church in length 33 yards one foot. Breadth 19 yards and a half. On Friday 8th day December in the year 1775 the tenor third and treble bells were retuned being recast at Gloucester. Another drought in the year 1785 from 17 May to 17 July and another 1 June 1800 to 20 August. A high wind on 21 Jan 1802 did considerable damage to buildings shipping timber trees stacks of corn and hay ." Riveting Stuff !

Peter followed his father ( John b. 1748 ) as the tenant of Broad Oak Farm until his death in 1836. He is listed as the occupier and tenant of the farm in the Electoral Registers in 1834 and 1837. His wife Elizabeth kept the farm until some time between 1841 and 1846 by which time the tenancy had passed to a Peter Davies. Broad Oak was purchased by Christian Pate from John Humberton Cawley of Gwersyllt Park, Esquire and William Humberton Cawley his eldest son and heir, when it was occupied by Edward Gough ( Goff ). This is according to the solicitors Allington, Hughes and Bate.

Peter inherited very little from his father John. Again, the records of the above solicitors reveal in a claim of Royle against Boydell, that John left no property other than his stock and when he died there was not 5 pounds in the house. At the time, Peter had 4 young children and the farm was his only means of support. This makes sense, the children being Edward, Catherine, John and Peter.

There is an anomaly in that the Marriage Bond for Elizabeth Cooper and Peter states that he was aged 22 in 1820 - whereas I was reasonably sure that he was baptised on 3 June 1793 at Pulford. There is something wrong here. [:CR:].

Main Events

  • Name: Mary Pritchard was also known as Mary Snelson.
  • Biography: The problem here seems to be that Mary had two children after her husband Thomas Snelson died. They were given her married surname. I think this answers Richard Snelson's challenge in his letter of the 1st October 1988, although the case is not totally closed.

Family: Mary Davies (b. about 1835, d. 12 December 1898)

Main Events

  • Biography: In 1851 the Census has him living with his widowed mother Sarah at Cuppins Street, together with his half brother James, a 32 year old retired baker and a servant wench, Ann Griffiths aged 19. Half his luck !

"James the Drape" was a freeman of the City of Chester and when admitted on 30 April 1849, was living at Castle Street. This also gave his date of birth .... I have 15 February 1828 but the Freeman list in the Cheshire County Record Office gives James's date of birth as 15 February 1829. The Chester City Record Office gives it as 15 February 1828.

I also agree with Richard Snelson, that this is probably the same James Snelson who appears in Casseys Directory - 1876 and the Census of 1881. The appearance of Mary daughter aged 22 years in the 1881 Census ( therefore born circa 1859 ) and father James aged 53 ( therefore born circa 1828 ) would appear to confirm this.
The only doubts I have about this relate to the occupations of coal agent as well as wool draper. Still, perhaps he diversified ! In 1874 he is listed in Morris' Cheshire Directory as living at 6 Bridge Street Row, and being an Agent for Richard Evans & Co. This Company were Colliery Proprietors and Coal Merchants, operating out of 9 Coal Exchange, Black Diamond Street, Chester.

Later, his address is shown in the Post Office Directory of 1878 as 101 Boughton Street, Chester and the same entry indicates that he was still an agent for Richard Evans & Co operating out of the Coal Exchange in Black Diamond Street. Therefore, it may be that his residential address was not 9 Coal Exchange. Perhaps this was the coalyard ?
In 1881 his son James Chapman Leigh Snelson was admitted as a free man of the City. James the Coal was then living at 101 Boughton. This entry confirms that there were three James' ......... descending from James the baker ( free man 1810 ) through James the Coal ( free man 1849 ) to James the Clerk ( free man 1881 ).
I now have James' Marriage certificate ( to Mary Davies ). This gives his address as Pepper Street in 1857. [:CR:].

Richard James Snelson has several queries here. He wonders whether 101 Boughton is the same address, and whether "Place" could be "Court" ? My view is that this would be unlikely in 1881, when the quality of recording the census was quite good. I think Richard is probably right in conjecting that James' wife's maiden name might have been Mary Chapman.
