At the time that Roger Snelson wrote his will, John Snelson's daughter Alice Snelson [4614] was married to Robert Dugdale and they had a daughter Alice Dugdale [5032] - both mother and daughter are mentioned in Roger's will.

Presumably then mother Alice [4614] was born say at least 20 years earlier and probably her father John Snelson of Foxbanck was probably born in the late 1500s. For either Alice to be referred to as "kinswoman", Roger Snelson and John Snelson must also be closely related.

Family: Robert Snelston

Main Events

  • Name: Margarett Shocklach was also known as Margarett Snelston.
  • Marriage: Margarett Shocklach and Robert Snelston were married.1
  • Biography: I have guessed that she married Robert Bostock around 1450, give or take 25 years or so. This is a calculated guess recognising some dates that we have - namely that her husband's 2nd cousin Sir Adam Bostock was killed at the Battle of Blore Heath in the War of the Roses in 1459.

She must have been an heraldic heiress and brought the rights to the Shocklach arms with her to the Bostock family. See the Cheshire Funeral certificates for George Bostock of Holt, son of Lancelot; he shows the black Snelson scythe at position 10, out of quarterly 16, which is not the same marshalling as in the Visitation of Cheshire 1580 view of the Bostock of Churton Genealogy which has the Snelson shield at a different position - in fact at 7 out of 8.

Presumably George, Alice Snelston's great grandson, was alive at the time of the visitation in 1580 but unmarried. This fits with Alice being young at the time of the Battle of Blore Heath.
  • Birth: She was born about 1400.

Census

Note Alice Snelston Id #5,041 (Principal) was at home on Census night; Robert Bostock (#5037), son of Robert Bostock (#7194), son of David, married Alice daughter and heir of Robert Snelson (#5040), esquire, and heir of her mother, Margaret (#5039) who was heir to Thomas Shocklach (#5038). Through this valuable marriage Robert may have acquired a lot of land. He occurs in 1434 when aged about 40, in a lease of lands in Overmarsh for himself and Brian de Barnston. Robert had two sons: Robert of Churton (#5076) and John Bostock of Barton (5077).
