Main Events

  • Birth: The Walter Wright Snelson was born on 6 November 1900 in Frodsham Runcorn Workhouse.

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act established nine poor-law unions in Cheshire, each with its own workhouse. Workhouses were supposed to be a deterrent to the able-bodied pauper. Under the Act, poor relief would only be granted to those who passed the “workhouse test”, in other words you would have to be desperate to enter a workhouse.

Some people only stayed in the workhouses briefly, when there was no other option, others spent their entire lives in the same workhouse. As medical care in the home was expensive, the poorest women would sometimes come to the workhouse hospital to give birth.

  • Biography: The fiche for Victorian deaths held in the NSW State Library, Family History Centre, record Walter Snelson died Melbourne East, aged 47 ( reference 10307 ) in 1911; therefore he was born in circa 1864. The coincidence seems too great doesn't it ? I must check out the Victorian births. In another reference I found at the Australian National Library in Canberra, Walter Snelson died 1913 in East Melbourne, reference 10307; at the time of the 1899 Victorian referendum, he was described as a "contractor" aged 47.
The Queensland immigration records show Walter Snelson a 21 year old farm labourer from Chester left London on the "Merkara", a ship of 1900 tons under Captain Phillips on 10 February 1885, and that he was a free passenger disembarking at Rockhampton ( IMM/120 p101 MFPP/40-48 Mf 2058 M1701 ).
The SS Merkara was a ship of the British India Steam Navigation Company.
Eveline Cawley ( nee Dugdale ) recalls that her mother told her that Walter drove a horse drawn vehicle carrying mail ( very probably in addition to carrying other goods ). On the long quiet journey, Walter would sometimes fall asleep, but no matter, the horse knew the way. However, one night, the horse arrived without a driver. Walter had fallen and been run over by one of the wheels.
