  • Birth: Thomas Grimes was born on 18 April 1836 in Coventry.
  • Biography: Thomas and his wife Caroline plus two youg children departed from London 31st March 1866 according to Paul Chapman. The "Netherby" was an 1866 clipper of 944 tons, belonging to the famous Liverpool based "Black Ball Line" of the infamous Billy Bains fame. It sailed from London for Brisbane with 452 passegers and 50 crew. The ship was wrecked on King Island in the Bass Strait on I think 14 July 1866, no lives were lost. The wreck occurred on 14 July 1866, and the ship floundered for 10 days. Everyone seemed to have lost most of their belongings - Thomas lost everything except his moneybelt; evidently, he lost machinery and belongings worth 400 pounds according to Paul Chapman.
    HMS Victoria and HMS Pharis eventually rescued survivors and took them to Melbourne where a community concert wasa organised and raised enough money for blankets and clothes.
    With a crew of 50 and 452 migrants bound forQueensland, she ran ashotre in thick fog on the west coast of the uisland, about 60 kilometers south of the Cape Wickham lighthouse. A party set uout for help, and arrived at the lighthouse on 23 July. A whaleboaat set out for Melbourne and then a landing was made near Anglesea where the occupants met a shepherd who arranged for transport to Geelong. [:CR:].
  • Marriage: Thomas Grimes and Caroline Snelson were married on 23 June 1858 in the local parish church, by Licence, Ashby de la Zouch.2,3,1
  • Occupation: He was a butcher in Coventry in 1858.
  • Immigration: He migrated to Brisbane, Australia, from London in 1866. The "Netherby" was a clipper of 944 tons of the Black Ball Line. She was wrecked on King Island in Bass Strait on 14th July 1866. The 452 passengers and 50 crew on board were saved according to the "Log of Logs".4
  • Occupation: He was a farmer.
  • Burial: Thomas's remains were buried on 4 June 1920 in the local cemetery, 'Coton House', Clifton, Queensland.
  • Death: He died in June 1920, at age 84, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
