  • Name: He was also known as William Snellson.
  • Birth: He was born before 1668.
  • Residence: He resided in Gwersyllt, Denbighshire, Wales, about 1689 53.07876502,-3.00613403.2
  • Occupation: He was a labourer in Gwersyllt in 1703.3
  • Death: He died after 1707.
  • Biography:

Let's call him "William of Gwersyllt".

The parish of Gwersyllyt was formed in 1851 out of the parts of the townships of Gwersyllt, in the parish of Gresford, and Stantsy, in the parish of Wrexham. The parish of Rhosddu was formed in 1886 out of the townships of Stantsy and Acton in the parish of Wrexham, and parts of the parishes of Gresford and Gwersyllt. Parish records are held at the Clwyd Record Office, Ruthin as follows (a) Baptisms ..... 1851-1934 (b) Marriages 1851-1931 and (c) Burials 1851-1924. Gwersyllt is situated about 2 kilometers North of Wrexham in Denbighshire, Wales.

I have calculated William's approximate date of birth by simply going back 20 years from the birth of the first William son of William of Gwersyllt. Clearly, he could have been born a lot earlier depending on how old he was when he got married and then how old he was when they started having children. So he could have been born as early as 1650 or earlier I suppose.

During William's lifetime, Charles II began the third Anglo-Dutch War in 1672, and parliament and King were continually in conflict over Roman catholic office bearers. In 1685, James II and his wife Mary of Modena were crowned King and Queen under Anglican rites at Westminster.4

  • Biography:

Let's call him 'William of Gresford'.

Gresford lies some four kilometers North-North East of Wrexham in Denbighshire, Wales. The ancient parish of Gresford included, in addition to its Denbighshire townships, the smaller of the two main detached parts of Flintshire, the townships of Marford and Hoseley. The parish of Rhosddu was formed in 1886 out of the townships of Stantsy and Acton in the parish of Wrexham and parts of the parishes of Gresford and Gwersyllt ..... effectively the Northern inner suburbs of Wrexham.

The parish of Rossett was formed in 1840 out of the parish of Gresford, comprising the Denbighshire townships of Allington ( Trefalun ) and Burton, and the detached Flintshire townships of Marford and Hoseley. Burton, Rossett and Trefalun lie in a line adjacent to each other on the River Alyn running from West to East less than 2 kilometers North East of Gresford. Marford lies half way between Gresford and Rossett.

The main Wrexham - Chester road ( A483 ) runs through Gresford, Marford, Rossett and Pulford. The railway runs parallel to the A483 less than half a kilometer to the West all the way to Rough Hill and Lache where it moves to about 1 kilometer to the West before entering Chester. At a point 1 kilometer North of where the railway passes through Burton, it comes to Broadoak, and the Broad Oak Farm.

The church is a good example of a Perpendicular style of architecture, whatever that means.

Today, the national border between Wales and England places the following country villages in England :- Lache, Eccleston, Lower Kinnerton, Dodleston, Handbridge, Pulford, Poulton, Aldford, Churton, Farndon, Crewe Hall, Barton, Coddington, Shocklack, Tilston, Rough Hill.

[:TAB:]These villages are in Wales :- Broughton, Bretton, Hawarden, Higher Kinnerton, Kinnerton Green, Burton, BraodOak, LLai, Rossett, Revalyn ( Allington ), Hope, Holt, Darland, Marford, Moseley, Sutton Green, Isycoed.

There are Gresford Parish records for (a) Baptisms 1661-1870, (b) Marriages 1672-1884 and (c) Burials 1661-1887. In addition there are Bishop's Transcripts for the periods (1) 1670-1898 on microfilm at the National Library of Wales and (2) 1843-44 at the Clwyd Record Office Ruthin.

This may be the William SNELLSON who appears in Gresford Burials 1688-1735, but there is no direct evidence that I can see .... yet.6

  • Biography:

Let's call him "William of Llai"

Llai church is a chapel of ease of the parish of Gresford. It was consecrated in 1925. Llai became a separate parish in 1944. There are registers of marriages and baptisms for the period 1925-69 and 1925-71 respectively. Llai is situated in Wales, about 1 kilometer to the North of Gwersyllt and less than 2 kilometers to the West of Gresford in Denbighshire.

N.B. This would seem to indicate that some time between 1721 and 1726/27, part of the family may have moved to Llai and that the spelling of the name ( SNEL(L)SON ) was going through some evolution.6
